Elephants, known as Airaavats, shower the goddess with water. During droughts, elephants often know where to find water. This emphasizes her association with fertility.

Laxmi has 8 avatars. Laxmi married Vishnu in all of their avatars. When he appeared as Vamana, Rama and Krishna, she appeared as Padma, Sita, and Rukmani, respectively. She is inseparable from Vishnu.

Laxmi has 8 forms (Ashta Laxmi), each offering different kinds of support:

Gaja Laxmi:Helps with animal husbandry

Dhana Laxmi: Brings wealth in all forms

Veera Laxmi: Bestows courage and bravery

Vidya Laxmi: Helps with intellectual pursuits

Dhyana Laxmi: Grants agricultural bounty

Adi Laxmi: Brings happiness to mankind

Sanatana Laxmi: Aids those who want children

Vijaya Laxmi: Aids with spiritual enlightenment

 

Common Laxmi Mantra:

Karagre Vaste Laxmi, Kara Madhye Saraswati Kara Moole Tu Govinda, Prabhate Kara Darshanam.

 

I focus on my fingers and visualize the blessings of Laxmi, who dwells there. I focus on my palms and visualize the blessings of Saraswati, who dwells there. At the base of my hand, I visualize the blessings of Vishnu, who dwells there. And so, I focus on my hands every morning and seek divine manifestations.

Chant the mantra early in the morning while focusing on the palms of your hands to show gratitude to the three deities of wealth, wisdom, and power.

 

Festivals to Celebrate Laxmi Devi:

Diwali:

Timing: Oct – Nov Laxmi is celebrated globally during Diwali to seek her blessings in wealth and business.

Vara Maha Laxmi Vrat:

Timing: July – Aug Married women observe a fast and pray to the eight forces of Ashta Laxmi for the well being of family members.

Sharad Purnima:

Timing: Sep – Oct The harvest festival marks the end of monsoon and is celebrated on the full moon day when Laxmi was born.

Manabasa Gurubara:

Timing: Nov – Dec Married women carry out this puja for comfort, peace and prosperity. Celebrated on every Thursday of the month .

 

Leaving Her Mark:

Drawing the Shripada, or Laxmi’s footprints is a common practice seen during Diwali, Laxmi Puja or when a newlywed bride first enters her in-laws’ home. The practice is meant to symbolize the Goddess entering and blessing the home.
